A New Post by Cay over @ Galileo's Dream

Pluto

Cay's been in a tizzy all week about the decision to classify Pluto as a planet or not.

Today's news is a boon for science. People will learn to adjust.

Help This Guy Find His Chicken Car

104952631 7B01545D7C

Logged onto Flickr today and saw a new comment posted to the pic featured above. Click on the pic to be taken to the photo page.

Here is what Steve Cantin wrote to me:

My name is Steve Cantin www.petsittervideos.com and I built this chicken car.
I had it taken to LA to be in a movie and it was impounded for being in a no parking zone.
The race car driver Tommy Kendall bought it at an auction that was held 2 days before it was supposed top be held and the guy that had borrowed it from me for the movie said he was on his way over to pay the fine and found out it was gone.
It took me weeks to find out who had it and since then I met with Tommy Kendall at one of his races.
I have other cars designed and we have discussed creating the Critter Car Limo Rental Business in the future.
I haven't been able to get in touch with Tommy Kendall and I need to speak with him.
Please pass this around the internet and maybe it will get back to him and he can call me at 614-206-4073 or email me at coo@stevecantin.com
You should also check out
www.krazyoke.com and incredibleseries.com for my other new productions. Great innovative products from the man that invented the chicken car and yes it does cluck--I created the recording!:)

Some searching has turned up these pics:

Even more pics can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=chickencar&w=all&s=int and http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=chicken%20car&w=all

I did some cursory google searches for the racecar driver Tommy Kendall and it turns out he's quite a presence in the racing world. He's even working as a commentator for races on CBS, Speed, ESPN, and Spike TV. Hopefully someone out there can let Tommy know about Steve wanting the chicken car back. Let's hope this story has a happy ending.

Weird experimental attempt at verbose blogging

My posts tend to be short.  In an attempt to mix things up and keep things interesting here at the org, I'll use Performancing For Firefox to drag and drop content and see what happens.

I've been using Ecto for publishing this site but recently I've been down with the PFF.

My morning browse begins with my homepage, a Personalized Google Portal. Screenshot is here. You have to login to Flickr if you want to see the 1916 x 1173 original.

It's got the NYT, digg, slashdot, del.icio.us popular, and reddit laid out with local weather, a word of the day, quote of the day, some stock info, and my gmail.

Here are the links that are grabbing my attention:

http://digg.com/apple/Think_Secret_Leopard_Screenshots Way cool look at the future of Mac OS X
Palm to Unveil New Treo Model Next Month No P Model?
Half Life 2 QTVR Panoramas Nice work. I'm only halfway through Episode One. I don't want to finish it since it's so gorgeous. Make sure you hit "click to view" links underneath the thumbnails.
The Internet Makes You Stupid Whoa. I am dying here. AOL search histories. Make sure you make it through all eight pages.
http://nycgarages.com/ Nice interactive guide to NYC parking garage rates. Very Web 2.0 with Flash and GoogleMaps combined. This is what the web is meant for.
When The Levees Broke Spike Lee's HBO documentary series premieres tonight. Definite Tivo.

Los Angeles Mapped

Prospective map showing automobile roads, Los Angeles and vicinity

Thanks to Trent Anderson for sending this along to me.

From the exhibition overview:

The Library of Congress/Ira Gershwin Gallery presents historical maps of Los Angeles from the collections of the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division. These diverse works of craftsmanship, precision, and imagination provide a guide to some of the most remarkable stories of the city’s history: its discovery, its growth, and its industries, as seen by explorers, engineers, artists, residents, and boosters.

The Los Angeles Times deserves a Pulitzer for this

Altered Oceans is an incredibly well done series of articles by Kenneth R. Weiss and Usha Lee McFarling.

Please take the time to look through and absorb some of the most important issues facing our oceans today. This ran last week here in LA and I hope some non-Californian readers will take note.

As a surfer and triathlete I'm in the Santa Monica Bay all year round. Many friends and colleagues express dismay when they find out I spend that much time in our polluted waters. In June I contracted an ear infection that hasn't gone away and a week ago my eyes turned red from another bacterial infection. The water may look clean during our summer months but this is the first time I've ever gotten sick from exposure to open water.

Growing up in Pennsylvania I grew up in a place where storm water was collected into reservoirs but here in LA everything from the streets gets run off into the ocean. Yuck. After a rainstorm it's recommended that you stay out of the water for at least 72 hours and I obey that cardinal rule. There are plans to divert storm water to the sewage system but it will be decades before a proper system is in place. All I can do is hope more people get educated about urban and agricultural runoff.

By the way, the 22nd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, September 16th, 2006 from 9:00 am to noon.

I submitted the cleanup link to digg: http://digg.com/environment/Help_Clean_Up_the_California_Coast_on_Sat_9_16_06_from_9am_noon
