Nautica Malibu Triathlon 2005

Woke up at 4:30AM on Sunday morning. Had coffee, breakfast, packed, and was on the road by 5:30AM bound north on Pacific Coast Highway to Zuma Beach in Malibu.

It was a little chilly by the time I parked a little after 6:00AM. I rode my gear to the transition area where I found station 1013. It was right next to the entry gate off the swim. Sweet. I donned my wettop and herded with the other athletes to the swim start where I was the fourth wave to go in the 35-39 Category. We watched the three waves ahead of us head out into the half mile swim where they were pummeled by good sized 4 foot thumping barrels that made the crowd audibly wince and cringe. We white caps were extremely lucky in getting out and over the break pretty easily. All of us were rejoicing in our luck as we swam the 150 yards to the first buoy. It was a straight shot up the beach past two more buoys and then a right turn to the beach. I got out easily but lost my cap.

Made it to the bike very easily and I was on the road for the next 18 miles where PCH took us north to Leo Carillo State Beach which was the turnaround. There were some minor climbs but nothing outrageous. I got passed by the 40 year olds on their tri bikes that woosh by you. I did some passing of my own and by the time I got to the run, I felt pretty good. Ran steady and fast down to Point Dume State beach for two miles before the turnaround. I had to tie each of my shoes once so I ran faster to make up for it. I crossed the finish line and saw 2:02:XX. I was bummed. I wanted to make it under two hours since last year my time was 2:09:58.

I got back to the transition area and overheard these two guys in my group talking about their times. I realized that the time I saw was the time after the first wave of pros left twenty minutes before mine left. Subtracting 20 minutes from 2:02:XX gave my a 1:42:XX finish which is shaving off 27 minutes from last year's time. W00t. Can't wait to see results. Don't know when they post...

UPDATE: Saw results which had me finishing at 1:48:XX I guess we started 14 minutes after the pros? I thought it was longer but oh well. Still means I shaved off 20 minutes from last year and I made it above the 50 percentile mark (just barely.)
