My First Century

Point Mugu, originally uploaded by Nigel Stewart.

This past Saturday night I got a text message from my buddy Jim Crosse and it said "Meeting @ 7:45 at San Vicente and Ocean for a group ride up PCH."

I got up early on Sunday, cooked breakfast, and watched the end of Stage 7 in the Giro D'Italia which was epic. Cadel Evans winning in a challenging and extremely muddy race. Great inspiration for my upcoming ride.

Jim and I rode north to the meetup point but I guess we missed the big group so we found ourselves with a group of about 11 by the time we got to the Pacific Coast Highway. We rode at a nice 22 mph clip up through Malibu and we charged the Pepperdine hill with all we had. Soon after this hill, Jim's friend Papo had to pull over for a "natural break" meaning he had a little too much coffee. We decided to wait for him and soon it was just the three of us heading past Latigo Canyon.

Somewhere before Heathercliff and Zuma Papo and I dropped Jim on a hill and we tried waiting up for him but he was just a little too far behind our pace to ever catch up. I sat on Papo's wheel most of the way and we had it going anywhere from 19 - 24 mph on the flats.

We reached Point Mugu's Big Rock pictured above in about two hours. Not bad. We made the turnaround and headed south going at a nice tempo pace. We eventually caught Jim who had turned around at Sycamore Canyon. The rest of the ride back was a very pleasurable ride with a little tail wind and no blazing sun. I said goodbye to Papo and Jim on San Vicente and headed home.

By the time I got to my house at noon I checked my cycling computer's mileage meter and it told me I had gone over 75 miles. Cay wasn't due home for another two hours so I decided to have a quick lunch before getting back on the bike to ride another 25.

I've always wanted to do one. My previous longest ride was 86. Instead of an organized group ride like the Solvang Century, my first crack at 100 miles began with the ride out to Point Mugu. I got back on the bike @ 12:30 and decided to roll around the West side of LA. Did San Vicente, went down Sawtelle to the Ballona Creek bike path, up through the Marina, Venice, and Santa Monica and finally to home where Cay shot this pic : http://www.flickr.com/photos/thecay/4609670591/

It was a blast. Feels great to do something new.
