Back from Seattle

public market, originally uploaded by The Cay.

Cay and I were in Seattle, Washington last week to visit her brother and his family.

A large set of her pics is here.

Had a great time getting introduced to the city and spending time with my niece. Looking forward to more visits in the future since Lionel will be up there at least another 4 years pursuing a PhD in Psychology.

My last day of work was May 13 and since then I have been living the high life of total freedom.

Staycation is a coinage I heard the other day at a party that means what it sounds like it means. Instead of spending money on a trip, many people this summer are choosing to enjoy their home cities, towns, and states. With gas prices and airline travel being very expensive these days, it makes sense.

I have yet to put fuel in my car since being laid off and it still has a half a tank of bio-diesel in there to get me through the next couple of months. I plan on traveling by foot, bicycle, or public trans for the rest of the summer. I might have to take the Benz out for a couple shopping trips but for the most part I think I can meet my goals. (Diesel and Bio-d are above 5 bucks a gallon - by the end of the summer I hope to convert her over to veggie oil and get fuel from Cay's school.)

Cay and I have two short trips planned to Seattle and Manitoba in the next six weeks and I will be back to work by the beginning of August. Until then I'll be training for Nautica's first Olympic length Malibu triathlon that runs on September 13. I'm also thinking of doing the LA Olympic tri as well but it's the week after Malibu so that would be pretty hard. We'll see. If I feel good in mid-August I'll sign up for it.

I cycle. I run. I swim. I surf. I read books (Dreams from My Father, Freakonomics, Nickel and Dimed, Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid). I read the NYT daily and get several magazines (New Yorker, Harper's, CMJ, Wired, ICG). I surf the net (Politico, HuffPo, TPM, Kos, Digg, TechCrunch, Popurls, Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit, Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, MacSurfer, Daring Fireball, Kottke, BoingBoing). I play video games (CS Source, D&D Online, BioShock, Call of Duty 4, Team Fortress 2). I clean house. I cook. I do tech support for friends and family. I veg on the couch (The Daily Show, Colbert, Countdown, Letterman, movies, the NBA, MLB, pro cycling, Veracifier).
